Cultural Venues in Dundee

Caird Hall The Caird Hall is Dundee’s main Concert and Event auditorium, located in the heart of the city. The Caird Hall was built between 1914 and 1923, building work came to a halt because of the First World War. It was named after its benefactor Sir James Key Caird, who donated up to £100,000 for it. Designer of the Caird Hall, James Thomson, city’s architect, was inspirited by Roman and Greek culture. The face of the building consists of ten Doric columns, each four feet in diameter and thirty-two feet high.

Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA) Dundee Contemporary Arts is an institution, located in the city of Dundee, that present a programme of contemporary visual art and culture. DCA consists of contemporary art galleries, cinemas, a print studio, the Visual Research Centre (part of the University of Dundee) and a variety of education spaces. DCA's success is thanks, like we can read on the web side of DCA, “to the commitment of its audiences who have supported the organization by visiting, attending, participating, enjoying, challenging and questioning”. DCA mission “promotes the developmentand exhibition of contemporary art and culture through providing opportunities for artists to create, and for audiences to engage with an active, varied and high-quality cultural life for the people of Dundee, Scotland and beyond”.

McManus Gallery The McManus is located in Gothic Revival-style build, in the centrum of Dundee. The building was designed by George Gilbert Scott – advocate of the Gothic architectural style. The building was closed to the public on 24 October 2005 and was re-opened to the public on 28 February 2010. This restoration was funded by Dundee City Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, the European Union and Historic Scotland, with additional contributions from The McManus Fundraising Appeal.

Dundee Repertory Theatre Dundee Repertory Theatre consists of Dundee Rep Ensemble, Scottish Dance Theatre and Rep Creative Learning. DRT was established in 1999 with the mission of bringing together a permanent full-time company of actors.

Dundee Science Centre Dundee Science Centre is a part of the Scottish Science Centers Network. It is a charity organization, funded by the public and donations. DSE helps families learn, support the formal school’s curriculum, advance the science communication profession, bring together science and the public, and help others to do the same too.
